In the context of mobile payments, the rollout of Google Wallet might easily be viewed as being as critical to the industry as Google itself has been to the Internet search engine. But not unlike the Internet search engine, there’s not just one name in the game and with a competitive marketplace emerging even before widespread user adoption, it will be an interesting if not exciting game to watch.
A joint venture between AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile, Isis is currently Google Wallet’s only visible mobile wallet competitor. Although it has been around since 2010, Isis has until recently maintained a relatively low profile compared to Google which announced its plans almost a year afterward.

mHealth Rides a Fresh 4G Wave of Optimism
Explore (Jan 3 2012) Mobile Broadband , NFC
By John Keough, analyst, Yankee Group While mHealth has always been a darling of the connected device industry, it has often been considered too laden with regulatory burdens and business model baggage to take off anytime soon. But the health care industry is making marked moves in that direction. The recent 2011 Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) mHealth Summit showcased several substantial commitments from large players in the industry, increased involvement of large-scale solution providers, and an overall optimism that given a few substantial changes and added incentives, the potential benefits of mHealth applications can soon be realized. Three interesting themes resonated throughout much of the show: hubs, reimbursement models and data management. Hubs: Qualcomm stole the show with its announcement of the 2net hub and supporting platform. The hub contains cellular modems and provides connectivity to peripheral mHealth devices throughBluetooth,Wi-Fi and ANT+, greatly simplifying connectivity issues for device manufacturers. The hub concept is not new in the mHealth space (other companies including Ideal Life have promoted the concept for a few years), but Qualcomm’s 2net is one of the first technology-agnostic offerings, while past offerings have generally been tied to a specific carrier. Using a hub with multiple cellular chipsets embedded in it will allow solutions providers to offer an end device with more complete cellular coverage and greater billing flexibility for the end-user. Reimbursement: Under the current fee-for-service payment system utilized inU.S. health care, doctors are reimbursed on a per-service basis, and hospitals are reimbursed per patient admission. While this encourages doctors to be thorough in their examinations, it also can create an economic incentive to perform unnecessary examinations. Some discussions centered around an accountable care organization (ACO) model, which pays care providers based on quality-of-care indicators and minimizes overall costs. While ... (Read Full Article)

For NFC, Success Depends on Magical Experiences

Every industry needs a killer app. For electricity, it was the lightbulb. For the Internet, it was e-mail. But what will be the killer app for near field communication (NFC)? That was the topic addressed by Osama Bedier, VP of payments at Google, during his keynote at 4G World 2011’s NFC Forum. The answer may just be payments, he said, but it won’t be payments alone. Bedier took issue with the current state of NFC affairs in which players are releasing competing initiatives (like Google Wallet vs. the carrier-run Isis) and squabbling over arcane technology issues like the best place for the secure element (be it on a chip, SIM card, etc.). Only if the industry can collaborate enough to ensure that mobile payments—together with mobile shopping, coupons, loyalty programs, and more—deliver consumers what he terms “magical experiences” will NFC truly take off and see success. “Magical moments are the ones that save consumers time and money,” Bedier said, and what NFC has going for it is the magical ability for users to simply tap their device to another device (or poster, or object) and receive an instance response and an instant connection. “The number of devices will reach tens of billions, and every one of those devices will connect to the Internet,” he said. “There is no better technology to connect these devices today than NFC.” He said that Google, with Wallet, is dedicated to showcasing the best experiences it can but is also trying to foster the kind of openness that will let the ecosystem leverage all aspects of NFC. “We want to learn, iterate and eventually help stitch the experiences together to create something truly magical.” If that means that merchants and consumers use Wallet to exchange information among themselves—and use Google ... Google Should Put Motorola Mobility’s Home Group on the Auction Block
By Vince Vittore, Principal Analyst, Yankee Group Google’s acquisition of Motorola may have been driven by the latter’s portfolio of patents, but it has also brought Google a leadership position in the video market. Motorola’s Home Group, which generated a little more than U.S.$1.8 billion in net revenue through the first six months of the year, is one of the two dominant global providers of video infrastructure. Together with Cisco, Motorola Mobility effectively maintains half a duopoly over the set-top box (STB) market in North America. It is also is the leader in both units and revenue for IPTV STBs and, most importantly, has existing contractual relationships with virtually every pay TV provider of significance. Those connections to operators are already sparking some grumbling within the cable community. The initial fear appears to be that Google’s mantra of open platforms and support of Net neutrality clashes with operators that have been loath to provide anyone outside the pay TV tent with access to STBs. Why Google Should Sell--and Who Will Buy Google could create a more open platform on the STB. However, getting operators to cooperate is another story; pay TV is still a fundamentally closed system. We believe Google would be better served by putting the Home Group on the market, perhaps with the company retaining access to or even ownership of certain software technologies such as the Medios platform. Consider the following: Motorola Mobility’s Home Group financials don’t match Google patterns. Although the Home Group has recorded net revenue for the past four quarters of U.S.$3.73 billion, growth has been flat and Motorola provided slightly downward guidance in its last earnings call. The Home Group will attract buyers. Motorola Mobility’s strategic position with pay TV ... (Read Full Article)
