    12. 4G ‘Enterprise-class’ Connectivity – Why Wi-Fi Matters

      Explore (Aug 6 2012)

There’s no doubt about it, 4G mobile broadband offers unprecedented throughput and capacity and for bandwidth-hungry applications it would seem to be a panacea for enterprise IT.  But just how practical is it for enterprises to set loose a flood of 4G mobile devices in the office, at home or on the road?  For enterprises Wi-Fi offload is gaining both visibility and momentum as one element of the logical solution – but there’s no slam-dunk at present.

Delivering 4G ‘enterprise-class’ connectivity can very simply be defined as deploying a network and devices that can cost-effectively provide secure access to applications and information when and where a user requires it.  The definition itself is simple enough but the challenges to deliver it can be daunting.

    16. Wi-Fi vs. 4G: Is There Really a Debate?

      Explore (Jul 16 2012)

Call it the metaphor meeting the point break. With last year's installation of Wi-Fi service that covered Venice Beach in Southern California, Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) brought Web surfing to the home of the real thing -- perhaps heralding the future of wireless communications, where Wi-Fi would be everywhere, including the beach.

With mesh-network technology and solar-powered access points mounted on lifeguard stands, Time Warner Cable's SoCal beach infrastructure is just part of what some see as the "network of the future" -- a collection of Wi-Fi clouds that will deliver faster, better and cheaper wireless services, with coverage broad enough to free us from our cellular overlords, no matter where we hang out. This new, big Wi-Fi network idea was one central thought that emerged during a recent one-day conference at Stanford University, where all kinds of smart people involved in the business of wireless contemplated how unlicensed spectrum was going to "expand the reach and decrease the cost of broadband."

      Explore (Jul 8 2012)

If you told mobile carriers a few years ago that in a few years, one of their biggest challenges would be managing the explosion of traffic on their data networks, they would not have believed you, or they might have said it sounds like a nice problem to have. Furthermore, if you told them that offloading some of their traffic and users to Wi-Fi would be the increasingly accepted way of dealing with that problem, they would have laughed you out of the room.

    21. Converged Service Offerings Reshape Market Competition

      Explore (Jun 25 2012)

In a series of announcements made Friday of last week, US cable operator Comcast indicated that it will begin offering Verizon Wireless services to its cable subscribers in ten more states including Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Georgia Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.   Verizon Wireless and Comcast have already commenced co-marketing of their bundled cable and mobile services in several major markets outside the Verizon service territory including Atlanta, Chicago, Colorado, Kansas City, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Seattle.

"Together with Verizon Wireless, we're delivering more value for more consumers by providing an entertainment and communications solution that aligns with their lifestyles,” explained Comcast Regional Vice President of Marketing Kerry McKelvey.  The key message here has to be the acknowledgement of alignment with consumer lifestyles - something that both the cable and wireless industries have long been criticized for ignoring. "Because mobility is a top priority for the consumer, we have developed an offering that provides a terrific wireless, entertainment and communications experience in one spot,” said Jonathan LeCompte, president, Verizon Wireless Georgia-Alabama Region.

Five cable companies, including Comcast and Time Warner, have agreed to let subscribers roam freely on Wi-Fi networks operated by one another.

Five of the country's largest cable providers have teamed up in an effort that will make a collective of 50,000 wireless hotspots available to their subscribers. Comcast, Time Warner, Cablevision Systems, Cox Communications, and Bright House Networks agreed to let each others' Internet customers roam freely among the hotspots. The move counters similar services being offered by network operators such as AT&T and Verizon Communications.

Essentially, anyone who subscribes to the Internet services provided by any one of these five cable operators will be able to access any of the 50,000 Wi-Fi hotspots run by the other cable corps.

The bulk of the hotspots are located inNew York Cityand the surrounding tri-state area. A handful of other markets, includingLos Angeles,Orlando,Philadelphia, andTampaare also included from the onset. The cable companies expect to add more coverage and availability over time.

    23. Business Case for Carrier Wi-Fi Offload

      Explore (May 17 2012)

Operators of 3G and 4G cellular data networks face an uphill battle against rapidly increasing data usage and declining ARPU. Increased sales of iPhones, Android smartphones, tablets and notebooks with embedded 3G/4G capabilities are all taxing the macro networks for scarce capacity resources. This exponential growth of data traffic is forcing operators to evaluate mid to long term migration strategies to LTE while in need for short term strategies to relieve their congested macro networks. On top of these clear and present dangers to the day-to-day operations of the network, operators are faced with increased scrutiny from shareholders to prove that a pure LTE overlay deployment will provide a positive ROI as well as an improved customer experience.

One method that is getting the most attention for managing the mobile data tsunami is WiFi Offloading.  Recent market research indicates that even though very few dedicated carrier WiFi offload networks exist, a lot of data traffic is already being offloaded to existing private and public WiFi networks in homes, at work and public hotspots. Research companies Comscore and Heavy Reading estimate that between 20%-80% of smartphone mobile data traffic traverse these private/public WiFi networks.  Several network equipment vendors are rushing to develop carrier-grade WiFi infrastructure solutions, while MNOs are analyzing how to integrate WiFi capabilities into their networks in order to offload data traffic from their primary 3G/4G network.  But there has been a lack of analysis to examine where, when, and if using WiFi offload actually helps an operator’s business case.

    24. Small cells and Wi-Fi offload: a complementary approach to increase in capacity density

      Explore (May 1 2012)

We all love a fight, and for a long time small cells and Wi-Fi offload have been presented as competing approaches, mostly with Wi-Fi as the initial, cheap-and-cheerful solution that would eventually be replaced by carrier-grade small cell deployments in high-density areas.

This is not what is happening. The pressure on mobile operators to increase capacity – and especially capacity density (i.e., mbps per square mile) – is so strong that they cannot pick between small cells and Wi-Fi, but they equally need both. And this is because operators increasingly realize that the two technologies not only offer an incremental increase in capacity, but they can play a different, complementary role.
