Huawei: $6B Sugar Daddy for US Chipmakers
Explore (Feb 21 2012) 3G , 4G , LTE , WiMAX
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is doling out $6 billion in new chip contracts to three U.S. companies, the Chinese giant revealed Friday. Avago Technologies Pte. , Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq: BRCM) and Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) have been awarded three-year original equipment manufacturer (OEM) deals by Huawei, worth $6 billion in total. A spokeswoman for company told Light Reading Mobile that it won't reveal how the billions are split between the three contract renewals. Qualcomm says that it will be supplying its Snapdragon mobile processors and multi-mode modems to Huawei. Avago says that it will be able to expand its mobile infrastructure portfolio with the new Huawei support. All three are all already silicon suppliers to the Chinese giant. Why this mattersHuawei can't yet seem to get in on the action with major U.S. carrier infrastructure contracts, but it can splash the cash on American suppliers. The company says that since opening in the U.S. in 2001 it has partnered with 280 firms inking contracts worth more than $30 billion in all. 2011 marked an 8 percent increase in spending in the region year-on-year for the company. Getting Closer: Huawei Scores 4G Deals in Canada
Explore (Feb 14 2012) 4G , LTE , Mobile Broadband
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has sealed Long Term Evolution (LTE) network deals with BCE Inc. (Bell Canada) (NYSE/Toronto: BCE) and Telus Corp. (NYSE: TU; Toronto: T) in Canada. Huawei says they mark its first LTE radio access network wins with top-tier carriers in North America. The company closed the deals with the operators Thursday at a signing ceremony in Beijing, with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in attendance. Bell Canada says that its LTE network already covers 3.5 million Canadians. Telus plans to launch its 4G offering this Friday. Both are following Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. (NYSE: RCN; Toronto: RCM) into the LTE market. This has already been a big week for LTE north of the border. On Tuesday, Canadian authorities approved Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH)'s bid to use satellite spectrum for terrestrial LTE, ahead of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decision. (See Dish: This Year's LightSquared?) Why this mattersHuawei is edging closer to the U.S. with these LTE deals. The vendor has already been working with Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR) on LTE TDD tests in Phoenix, but has generally lost out on big deals with Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) because of security concerns and other issues. For moreRead more about Huawei's pursuit of U.S. business. 2011 Rewind: Where in the World Is LTE?
